Interview With York’s Punk Hardcore Band Seep Away

We sat down with Dom from York’s Hardcore punk band Seep Way. Here’s what they had to say when we asked them a few quick fire questions

How did the band form?

We formed a few years back. Myself (Dom Smith, Drums) and Max (Watt, guitars) decided to build something more anarchic, chaotic and punk rock than our previous Goth-blues band, stickybackplastics. It’s been a labour of love, and hate, ever since.

What’s been the highlight of the band’s career so far?

Supporting Norwegian band, SHINING at Fibbers (York), in what turned out to be a defining moment in the band’s career, for the best, and worst reasons.

What festival would you love to headline in the future?

Damnation in Leeds, man. We all love it there. We tried to get on to Bloodstock once too, but we lost out to everyone in Burnley’s least favourite Rob Zombie rip-off band. I’m not bitter about it…at all. Ours shows with Hands Off Gretel were mint too, and they meant that we could be ridiculous. We are ridiculous, but we absolutely smashed them.

What bands are you digging at the moment?

Turnstile, Backtrack, Tigercub, Fangclub, Mothcob, Pat Putcher, HEX, Lugubrious Children, Petrol Hoers (correct spelling!), there are loads, man. We’ve played with some awesome bands. Any band we’ve played with at Fulford Arms in our hometown of York!

What plans have you got for 2018?

Well, I’m hoping by the time I move back from the US in the summer, we won’t all hate each other! Na, most of us are good! Haha! I’d love to do more shows soon, but for now, Max is busy with his new band Rotting Monarchs, Dani (bass) works in journalism so works all the hours in the universe, to her credit, but I think her and Jay (vocals), want to form a riot grrrl-inspired act with members of other bands in York later this year.  I’m super excited to hear that, if it ever comes off, because Jay works in film as an animator for like…Kate Rusby or some shit, which is pretty awesome, to be fair. Also, I’ve formed a dark Joy Division-inspired post-punk act with Kiran Tanna (the vocalist in my drone-metal band, The THING!), and we launch that in July, it’s called Mary and The Ram (https://soundcloud.com/maryandtheramofficial/the-dream-john-fryer-mix).

So, yeah. I hope Seep Away will perform again.

Do any of the band have any weird rituals before going on stage?

I can’t speak for the other members of the band, but man, do I love a pre-gig poo. It’s essential, as I (like most bands, and artists…and don’t pretend it doesn’t happen to you too Justin Bieber) suffer from gig nerves, and the best way to relive it, is most definitely to take the time to evacuate the bowels.

What’s the biggest inspiration as an individual and as a band?

Mine? Pre-gig poos. Na, man. The fucking voice in my head that’s like….’you have to keep doing shit, and get out of your comfort zone’.  I hate it, but it’s always there pushing me to do stuff, when all I really want to do is sit in my pyjamas wanking. But yeah, if anyone else has that annoying voice in their head, or that gut feeling, go with it, I find that out of your comfort zone is where life gets interesting…as annoying as that is! Other than that, definitely family, and friends. Oh, and an insatiable desire to get people to mosh to my terrible/terrifying beats. That’s all I ever really want.

Band wise? Hatred for humanity. We’re all well-loved, and we’ve got nothing to complain about…but then, life can suck for everyone, no matter what background. So we just stress about shit that we can’t do in everyday life, in our music – everyone has stress, and we just use this as our collective outlet. And, we are glad that about five people over our two year history have given enough of a fuck to come and see us live. Thank you!

What’s your favourite venue to play and why?

 THE FUCKING FULFORD ARMS, MATE.

What album is the one album you listen to at least once a week?

At the moment, because I fucking love alternative rock, Tigercub’s new record is on repeat, also Code Orange’s new stuff, but I’m really loving the new Turnstile material too. Max, who loves hardcore punk (he writes all of our shit, yo), is a big fan of Backtrack’s stuff. My beautiful Jay just listens to Bowie, and Dani…man, I’m pretty sure she just watches RauPaul’s drag race when she’s not working, or travelling the length and breadth of the universe, like the fucking heroine that she is. So, a nice mix of stuff there! Haha!
