We’ve had some great top tens featuring a wide range of music, but one area I feel we have lacked is Black Metal.
Well fear not, we have spoken with Helvett of Norwegian band Natas who is somewhat of a Black Metal expert and he will be taking through the best 2017 had to offer…
10. White Death – White Death
Listening to this you are deffos gonna ask yourself 900 times if this is Goatmoon, but it isn’t. It is just a fucking straight up “scare the fuck out of your neighbours” kick ass nonstop pounding black metal with no signs of stop. Great for sociopaths and halfcasts stuck in mindfuck central. Great Finnish black metal like always.
9. Fen – Winter
This double disc release got better after seing them live, as I first enjoyed this greatly but coming back to the album after the concert gave me alot more. My number one working out album of the year and just a great journey of a album. One of those “let’s let go out of our minds for an hour and a half” kind of situations.
8. Wintersun – The Forest Seasons
Hey, I liked their first record aaaaaaand now this one. Jari fucking knows how to riff. That’s all i’m gonna say, it’s impossible not to like this one. I like 10 min + songs, it’s my weakness.
7. Nargaroth – Era of Threnody
His voice has stayed awesome through time but now the rest of the music has reached Kanwulfs level. They have been one of my favorites since Herbstleyd and this new release placed me 10 years back in time and i’ve been on a massive Nargaroth binge again. Love it.
6. Arkanum – Den Förstfödde
If you can handle a 13 minute slow, dark as fuck intro (over 2 songs) you have got a nice evil portal that leads you into the rest of album. A royalty of swedish black metal with a hammer that forges pure darkness. This is the bands 9th release and they’re only getting better with age.
5. Auðn – Farvegir Fyrndar
Wow, there are alot of good icelandic bands out there, but holy fuck these guys are giving you an insigt to a naturalistic land that you have to be apart of in your mind. This will have your soul grabbed by the balls and have you depressed and headbanging till your neck can’t handle any more. The bands strongest release and a instant classic for a pure metalhead.
4. Falls of Rauros – Vigilance Perennial
A stunning album that just takes you far away from reality. When I’ve got this album running on my headphones you can just give up trying to get in contact. It is a pure singular reason to go out into the mountain woods at night and just lay down under the stars forever.
3. Asagraum – Potestas Magicum DiabolI
I’ve known of this band for a while and having Trish as a good friend didn’t help me forsee the fucking black metal explosion of a release. Holy fuck these girls can outplay 95% of the world of music. Going from where they started and how fast they have progressed in their musical careers in a few months has been a blast. I’ve not seen them live yet but it’s on my coming year agenda. I’ve got neck insurance and i’ll be cashing it in asap! If you’ve not heard it – put on your seatbelts and get ready to get ear raped.
2. Ruins of Beverast – Exuvia
Even with a release not at the top of their standards it still wins a worthy number two with all releases this year. Placing native indians and magic in black metal and mastering it with mystery and long progressive dark music makes a good time for a person who rests in darkness, again like myself. This release takes you to a mythical delightful universe. You should travel there some time.
1. Evilfeast – Elegies of the Stellar Wind
As a bloodfan of every release this guy has created, as well as single outstanding songs like his contribution to “In Mordor Where The Shadows Are – Homage to Summoning” this the melodic black metal perfection. It’s a difficult genre to master in the eyes of a mighty picky person like myself, but I see this as an honorable winner of the year, even though it was just released December 15th. The winter kingdom grasps you instantly and I can’t stop listening to this. All hail Evilfeast.
